Lyander coinswallow has a very particular verve and style to their work, and this wild piece expresses that in as uncannily a manner as I think possible. Impossible to listen to this as a background track, it hooks you in.

about

Multiple award-winning composer Simeon Nathanael Davis (“Of Narratives & Nocturnes”) returns with “Welcome to Blackwater,” a hauntingly grooving, genre-bending single on a larger scale than ever before. Combining his band, the Simeon Davis Group, with a full symphony orchestra, Davis continues his signature programmatic writing style as he maps this musical overture onto the dark yet humorous stories of visual artist Sarah Navin, better known by her alias, Coinswallow.

Drawing influence from the classical tradition of storytelling with Camille Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre and the heightened melodrama of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, and combining it with the long-form jazz arranging techniques of master composers Maria Schneider and Bob Brookmeyer, Davis creates an immersive sonic world that transforms as it follows the interconnected relationships of Navin’s characters. Whether describing the monstrous or capturing the cheeky wit of the protagonists, the interplay between Navin’s creations and Davis’s orchestrations shimmers with the ebullience that only occurs when two powerfully creative forces meet. To bind this collaboration together, the artwork for the single was created by Navin herself, and visually summarizes the drama contained within Davis’s piece and within her own artistic world. Conducted by Ben Hillard, recorded live at the University of North Texas’s Voertman Hall, and mastered by GRAMMY nominee Ryan Schwabe, “Welcome to Blackwater” captures all the spontaneous flair of jazz and the powerful orchestration of the classical in Davis’s most daring work yet.
